Trip to Mysore

Finally the day arrived, this was the day that we had planned to go on a long tour. It was not clear until the day before 9.00pm where exactly we are heading to. As usual there opinions are provided than actual planning. But I was adamant to go out anywhere, just to feel the journey which i had not experience for a long time. On 24th Jan 2009, we started at 5.30 to Halebedu and Bellur, but on the way it got changed to Sharvanabelagola, reason - that it would take a 100km to and fro and we would be late to reach the Mysore city in the evening. So, Shravanabelagola is it. Its a wonderful sight. From far what I found was a big mountain and many tiny ants trying to reach the top and some to the bottom. When we came closer, I could see a lot of people who were doing this activity. What surprised me was , I reached around 10 am and most of them there were Foreigners, old people to be exact and they were in a shear determination to reach the top, without using a couch that is lifted by some strong men who carry them on their shoulder and drop them at the top. As we go above, the scenic beauty of nature is just touching. We will never expect to see it when we climb, but life is always about meeting the unexpected. We would have taken around 25 minutes to reach the top. This is basically a Jain Pilgrimage. During the visit i did notice few Jain member performing the ritual. We had climbed 500 steps and its 3000 Feet above see level. The statue is of Gomateswara which is finally seen on the top of the hill. It seems that it was curved by using one single block of Granite, nothing is added to it and is 60 feet high. Its a marvelous work.

From there we moved on to Ranganathitu ( Bird Sanctuary ). I had visited this place 15 years back. There was major change when compared to the past now. Its worth a visit. We went boating and could see the birds from couple of feet away from us.

That day evening turned out to be horrifying. Our family and my uncles family had set to see Brindavan garden, but the Traffic jam was terrible we had to return back from the gate and the traffic police directed us to go to another road. We were blocked in that road by few native people who claimed that its their village and nobody is allowed to use the road. Luckily, we were allowed to go. Wondering, how could humans be like this, one need to help each other when in trouble, and we do not belong to their city, so they need to show sympathy than becoming hostile.

Next day we went to Chamudi hills. I was unfortunate that I could not see the Goddess after a long wait in the queue. I was grumbling when standing in the queue, may be that is the reason i was punished. I really feel guilty. I need to make it up sometime when I go back again to Chamundi. Our final destination was the Mysore Zoo. It was wonderful, but we did not have the stamina to walk around 3 km within the zoo. My son enjoyed seeing the minimal animals that we passed by. I was a fabulous trip overall.

Brandenburg Gate

Today I completed reading a book – Brandenburg Gate by Henry Porter

Reading this book inspired me to know the importance of the Brandenburg Gate for the people of then East and West Germany. It was during 1980-1990 that revolutionary occurrence like this had happened. I should be studying in school then and I do not remember anybody during that period around me mentioning about this. In Eastern Berlin one in four people belonged to the Stasi (they act like spy's). The book that I have read has characters belonging to this group who play a very important role and few of them become defected.

My Research about this situation in brief -

West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany), developed into a western capitalist country with a social market economy and a democratic parliamentary government. West Germany was economically sound. Across the inner-German border, East Germany, (German Democratic Republic), established an authoritarian government with a Soviet-style planned economy. As West Germany's economy grew and the standard of living continually improved, many East Germans wanted to move to West Germany.
At midnight, the police and units of the East German army began to close the border and by Sunday morning, 13 August 1961, the border with West Berlin was closed.
Due to the closure of the East-West sector boundary in Berlin, the vast majority of East Germans could no longer travel or immigrate to West Germany. Many families were split, while East Berliners employed in the West were cut off from their jobs; West Berlin became an isolated enclave in a hostile land. West Berliners demonstrated against the wall. During the Wall's existence there were around 5,000 successful escapes to West Berlin. People got frustrated. There were many leaders who wanted the wall to go down. The protest of the East German’s is the West started by chanting “We are staying” started the trigger of the movement. Günter Schabowski the East German minister who returned back from his vacation unknowingly read the statement -East Berliners would be allowed to cross the border with proper permission but given no further instructions on how to handle the information. He assumed it would be the same day based on the wording of the note and replied "As far as I know effective immediately, without delay". Tens of thousands of East Berliners heard Schabowski's statement live on East German television and flooded the checkpoints in the Wall demanding entry into West Berlin. The surprised and overwhelmed border guards made many hectic telephone calls to their superiors, but it became clear that there was no one among the East German authorities who would dare to take personal responsibility for issuing orders to use lethal force, so there was no way for the vastly outnumbered soldiers to hold back the huge crowd of East German citizens. In face of the growing crowd, the guards finally yielded, opening the checkpoints and allowing people through with little or no identity checking. Ecstatic East Berliners were soon greeted by West Berliners on the other side in a celebratory atmosphere. November 9 1989 is thus considered the date the Wall fell. In the days and weeks that followed, people came to the wall with sledgehammers in order to chip off souvenirs, demolishing lengthy parts of it in the process.

Makara Sankranthi - 2009

The word is derived from "Sat" and "kranti", meaning "good movement." Shankrati means transmigration of Sun from one Rashi to the other. The Shankaranti festival usually refers to Makara Sankaranti , or the the transition of the Sun from 'Dhanu' Rasi (Sagittarius) to 'Makara' Rasi (Capricorn) . This marks the starting of Uttarayana, which means northern movement of Sun. - This is for the basic understanding of the festival, which is celebrated around India with different names. For us in Karnataka its Makara Sankranti.
I feel envious when I hear my Kannadiga friends let me know the various rituals that they need to perform that day, especially the ladies who are newly wedded.
I would like to share the way in which I celebrated. Knowing that its an important festival for people around me, I was enthu in doing something different today. I decided to gift something new to myself. I bought a mobile phone - Sonly erricson -w580i, its had many features, which i need to explore. A visit to the temple in the evening made the day worthwhile. Its Makara Joythi at Shabarimala, where thousands of devottee see the divine light high up the mountain that day. My Sankranti festival contined the next day by celebrating a Sari day in our office. Ofcource for which not all participated, it was more off like a Senior ladies celebrating

My View of the New Year

You could call it MY impression, belief or opinion of the new Year. - Today riding in my Scooter I was reflecting how is this day different from my past days. Why do I feel like wearing Saree while i have not worn it since a long time. I am more enthusiatic today. Was trying hard not to hit my son, who is a notorious one. I planned to do something new on this day. I feel that I should be thinking like this everyday because I will not be getting the days which is past behind me. I should utilize it to the max as possible. Now, when I am in office, i cannot do much other than work, but when I am out I can do something little. So, everyday should be like a new day for me. not that its not but the feeling of new year should persist for all the days of the year. Today its 2nd Jan which I am enjoying and writing this blog, but I will not get this same time again tomorrow. I am not sure if you will understand the complete meaning of my statement, but I feel enlighted on the fact that we do not get what is passed by and we should be enjoying each moment of it and not worry of what is passed by, but learn from our mistakes.

New Sewing Machine

Hey...I did something different at the end of 2008. I bought a sewing machine for my Mom. She needed one for doing minor repair to few new clothes which needed some re-stich. The brand is of "USHA", there are multiple embroidary stiches that could be done. One that I found helpful was the zig-zag stich and the hemming stich. These stitches are the saviours for most of my clothes. The seller also showed me the demo of how the make a button hole and we can also stich a button. I need to still attend few classes to know the best capability of the machine.
